Social Media Captions: 8 devastating mistakes NOT to do

STOP! You’re ruining your social media captions!

Words are powerful, especially in social media captions. You rush that part and you may as well be saying nothing! The right words can boost engagement and enhance your brand. But missteps can harm your image.

Here are 10 things you absolutely want to AVOID if you want to keep your community engaged and coming back for more.

Who are your social media captions talking to?

Understanding your audience is crucial. When writing captions, consider who they are and what they want, as well as what you want to get out of the post you are making. Is your post to generate more engagement? More follows? More shares or likes? Each of these questions needs to be asked first, before you begin to write your social media caption at all! Once you’ve nailed who you’re addressing, then make sure you’e not doing the following with your social media captions…

Ignoring Audience Preferences

I regularly post about writing and reading on my Instagram account.

I have done for YEARS! This is because my community trust me to provide that type of content and that’s why they followed me in the first place.
If I randomly put up a photograph of, let’s say, my car, it would cause confusion. If I then started writing about said car in my social media captions, going on about mileage for fuel and the colour and (can you tell I know nothing about cars?) people would, quite rightly, scroll past. So know what your community expects from you and stay in your lane!

Using Jargon and Complex Language

This is a pet hate of mine! Do you think jargon makes you sound smart? Think again. Using complex language alienates followers who prefer simple messages. Keep it simple. Clarity beats confusion every time. Just remember the KISS acronym (Keep It Simple Stupid) when writing your social media captions and you’ll be fine.

Inconsistency in Tone and Style

Consistency is key to building your brand voice. It helps create familiarity, which fosters trust. So when you go away from this, it confuses your audience – see point 1, and confusion leads to scrolling right past. So if you’re always friendly and chatty in your social media captions, and suddenly become all formal, people won’t instantly know it’s you and you’ll lose them!

Inconsistent Messaging

Got one message today and a different one tomorrow? This goes hand in hand with the tone and style of your voice in your social media captions.

Mixed messages lead to audience mistrust. Keep your message clear and consistent across all captions to build a reliable brand identity.

Overloading with Hashtags

Hashtags can expand reach but misuse them, and you’ll turn off followers. You must have seen them – a long list of hashtags in social media captions that do nothing to add value? Use hashtags sparingly and to the point.

Irrelevant Hashtags

Are your hashtags a random blend? Irrelevant ones confuse your audience and dilute your message. Stick to hashtags that connect with your content and followers for targeted reach.

Focusing Solely on Sales

Your captions shouldn’t just scream “buy now!” Constant selling turns audiences off. Engage them instead.

Neglecting Engagement and Storytelling

Do your captions lack storytelling? Captions are an opportunity to weave stories that captivate audiences. Storytelling connects people to your brand on a personal level, and you know how I feel about storytelling, so use those stories in your captions and not just a list of why you and your business is the best.

Using Captions as a Sales Pitch Only

Constant selling doesn’t add value to your audience’s experience. Provide insights, tips, a good laugh, a great how-to, you want people to read your social media caption and want to share it. People respond better to content that engages so let that be your starting point.

Lack of Call to Action

Every caption needs direction. Your followers should know what to do next. So when writing your social media caption, it’s a bit like writing a very simple story, a hook for the beginning, a informative middle and a direct ending with a lead of what to do after they finish reading.

Forgetting to Encourage Interaction

Are you prompting your audience to do something? A simple call to action can skyrocket engagement. Ask them to share, like, or comment for more interaction because it really makes a huge, huge difference. Most of my TikToks have a clear call to action at the end and when I don’t use one, or forget to add it, I can really tell the difference.

Not Inviting Feedback or Questions

Want your audience to stick around? Invite feedback or pose questions. This shows you value their input and builds a sense of community. TOP TIP – start a conversation in the comments. When someone leaves a comment, ask them a question, encourage them to answer and the more you have going on in the comments under your social media caption, the more the algorithm will push your post out and the more engagement you’ll get!

Check your social media captions!

So bring up your favourite social media platform and take a look at those captions. Are they working for you or working against you? Avoiding these ten common mistakes ensures your social media captions engage, not discourage. Keep all of this in mind when writing your next caption and if you need help, you know where I am!
