With work and family life commitments, I’ve been

With work and family life commitments, I’ve been away from my novel for a good 4 to 6 weeks.

The idea of going back to writing just seemed overwhelming and daunting to be honest.

But I’ve a good 25,000 words down, and a plotting spreadsheet.

I’ve all the tools I need - so what was stopping me from getting back writing?

I thought it was lack of motivation but it was only whilst I was filming this, that I realised it’s fear.

I’m a bit scared of it.

What if I read it and it’s a bit crap?
What if I don’t like the story any more?
What if the story I have in my head doesn’t match the one that’s on paper?

What if…what if…what if…

There will always be a voice asking ‘what if?’

There will always be a reason not to try to create something.

So here’s a post - to save and keep - to remind yourself that that when the voice asks ‘what if…?’

Reply with ‘so what?’

So what if it’s rubbish, you get to make it better.
So what if you don’t like something, change it.
So what if it isn’t the story you thought - make it into that story.

You’re the writer and you get to decide. Now get back to it.

I’m in various author groups on and offline, and someone is always wondering about a website and what the point of one is.

As a writer do you really need a website? Especially if you do most of your marketing and community building on your social platforms, then is a website really necessary?

This week I was struggling to concentrate on my writing.

I had a copywriting project to do and after work & doing copyedits on my novel, I just couldn’t get my brain in gear.

So I thought a change of scenery would help - and it did!

I took myself off to a café to do some writing, and I got so much more work done.

I was more focused, there was less distractions and procrastination and I finished the project easily.

So if you are struggling this week change the scenery, get to a café and see if it works for you.

To the stressed out writer, trying to do ALL THE THINGS and feeling like you’re failing.

You’re not.

No, really, you’re not ☺️

The problem is, you’re thinking you’re just a writer 🙈

But if you want people to read your work, buy your books, leave reviews, offer you writing opportunities, get representation and a publishing contract, work as a writer, get paid a brilliant hourly rate, choose your own hours and all of that lovely stuff, then you’re not just a writer.

You’re a social media manager, a PR team, an accountant, a guest speaker, a podcaster, a Canva specialist, a networker, a marketer, a sales team, a pitch expert…the list goes on! 😬

I see lots of groups talking about the craft of writing, which I LOVE, but not so much talking about the other, crappy stuff that needs doing but as writers, it’s the stuff we don’t want to think about!

So I’ve made some changes to a Facebook group that used to focus just on social media, but is now a space to discuss all of the extra bits that come along when you take the leap and follow your dream to be a writer.

And I’d love it if you joined us.

Hit a milestone on my WIP today 🥳

11k words hit and up to the ‘point of no return’ for my MC.

In previous novels, I would power on.
Creating what I call a ‘vomit draft’ to get the story out. But I’ve already done that with my spreadsheet and so, for the first time on a first draft, I’m going back to the start and editing as I go.

Feels weird.

And exciting! 🎉

Last weekend, inspired by the brilliant book #Nann

Last weekend, inspired by the brilliant book #NannyWanted, by @bylizzybarber I organised an extravagant game of Wink Murder for 16 people, aged from 10 to 80 years old.

It went down a storm and everyone wants to play it again.

Here's what I did.

First off, I secretly picked a detective and a murder and TOLD NO ONE. Yup, not even my husband, or kids.

I got three prizes for:
1. Best Death
2. Super Sleuth
3. Best Overall Player

I told everyone that they could not shout out who they thought the murderer was - they had to tell me privately and the first person to guess correctly, would win the 'Super Sleuth' prize, that would be announced at the end of the game.

Once killed, I told people they were then on the side of the 'murderer' and were in with a chance of winning 'Best Overall Player'

These two things stopped the younger players from getting over excited and winking at everyone, and shouting out who they thought the murderer was.

'The Best Death' award meant that everyone came prepared and my mum, who was the winner of this prize, brought a sound track of gun shots fired that she played from her phone as she died! Epic!

I also added the rule of once you've been winked at, you have a two minute window in which to die. So to fool the other players in case the murderer was alone with a victim.

I told the detective that when 10 people had died, they then had to give a speech, telling us all why they thought someone was the murderer.

This actually ended up being a rap, which again, was hilarious!
And they guessed correctly, which then ended the game and went onto the prize giving.

Everyone enjoyed it enormously, and the game itself lasted about an hour and a half whilst we all ate and drank and we couldn't stop talking about it all the next day.

It was so good, we're playing it again at our next get together, but I've been told to give everyone a character and different motives and maybe two detectives with lots of twists and turns, so y'know - like as if I'm writing a whole novel. 😂

So that's it!
I thoroughly recommend giving it a go, and if you haven't read Nanny Wanted, also recommend that brilliant read!
